This private toll road, which is only partially passable in winter, is the absolute highlight of the tour.

With snow: A breathtaking drive into a cloud-covered winter wonderland. The road winds its way up to an altitude of 1,600 meters and offers spectacular views of snow-covered fir trees, bizarre ice formations, and the mighty peaks of the Berchtesgaden Alps rising out of the sea of fog. A stop at one of the viewing platforms is a must for breathtaking photos.

Without snow: The entire road is often passable. You can enjoy clear, sharp views all the way to Salzburg and the entire Alpine chain. The colors are intense—the deep green of the fir trees, the white of the peaks, and the blue of the sky. The drive is just as spectacular, but with a completely different, clear drama.

We continue to a picturesque lake, an emerald green mountain lake at the foot of the Hochkalter massif.

With snow: The lake lies absolutely still and peaceful, often partially frozen and surrounded by a powdery blanket of snow. The silence is broken only by the crunch of your footsteps. The famous enchanted forest is transformed into a fairytale ice landscape with snow-covered, moss-covered rocks and bizarre ice formations on the trees. A short winter walk here is magical.

Without snow: The lake perfectly reflects the surrounding steep rock faces. Then you drive to the mountain station of a cable car. The ride up in the gondola is an experience in itself.

From above, whatever the weather: nce you reach the top, you can enjoy one of the most panoramic views in the region. You look directly onto the Watzmann, Königssee, and Berchtesgaden Valley. On the sun terrace of the mountain restaurant, you can enjoy this view with a cup of mulled wine or a warm snack (e.g., a “Brotzeitplatte” snack platter). The contrast between the warm interior and the cold, majestic mountain world is unforgettable.
